INTRODUCTION:   Occupational accidents (OA) is a considerable public health burden worldwide. In relation to that we organized the study aiming to perform risk assessment of OA and analyse covariates associated with OA occurrence in the pulp-and-paper and shipbuilding enterprises in the Arkhangelsk region, Russia.

METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted in the pulp-and-paper and shipbuilding enterprises in the Arkhangelsk region in 2010 in a random sample of employees (n = 1466) who reported on lifestyle, work experience and health status. Occupational hazards were analyzed by criteria for quality risk assessment of accidents at working place. Multiple logistic regression was used to examine the association between OA occurrence and age, health status, risks of OA occurrence adjusting for gender, income and educational levels, standard of living, work experience. Risks of OA were categorized by trivial, tolerable, moderate, substantial and intolerable.

RESULTS: Most of the responders were males (64.7%, n = 948). The mean age was 31.0 (95%CI: 23.0-43.0), total work experience – 10 years (95%CI: 4.0-23.0), work experience by profession – 5.0 (2.0-17.0). Three fourth of the responders (75.8%) reported, that working place is accidental. Risk assessment of OA revealed intolerable, substantial and moderate risks in respectively 10.4%, 16.3% and 21.4%. The highest risk of OA was detected in the pulp-and-paper enterprises. Higher odds of having OA occurrence were observed for workers in 26-40 (OR = 1.9, 95%CI:1.3-2.6) and till 25 age groups (OR = 1.8, 95%CI: 1.2-2.6); with self estimation of health on the unsatisfactory level (OR = 1.5, 95%CI: 1.1-2.0); at substantial (OR = 16.9, 95%CI: 10.4-27.4) and moderate risks (OR = 5.3, 95%CI: 3.8-7.5).

CONCLUSIONS: The study results show that younger age, unsatisfactory health status and increasing risk of OA are associated with OA occurrence in the pulp-and-paper and shipbuilding enterprises in the Arkhangelsk region.
