Epidemiology of chronic renal failure among admitted patients to the military hospital, Taiz (Yemen)

INTRODUCTION:  Chronic renal failure is an important health problem in the world including Yemen. This work was conducted with the principle objective of contributing to the epidemiological study of chronic renal failure among admitted patients to military hospital , Taiz (Yemen).

METHODS:  A total number of 360 admitted patients' files for the period Jan. to July 2010 that meets the study criteria were revised .The data obtained was fed to computer and analyzed using statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 13.0 . Chai square test was used to measure the strength of association between certain variables .

RESULTS:  The results show that most of admitted patients were males (80.5%) with hypertension being the leading cause of chronic renal failure followed by diabetes mellitus . Most of admitted patients were agriculture workers using insecticides an fertilizers in their daily work with high percentage of them were Qat chewers and tobacco/cigarette smokers. History of hypertension , diabetes mellitus and renal infections several years before admission was found among admitted patients.

CONCLUSIONS:  

The study concluded that different comorbid conditions were associated with the problem of chronic renal failure which play an important role in the increase of number of chronic renal failure in Yemen.
