MALARIA INFECTION IN PRAGNANT AS A RISK FACTOR THE INCIDENCE OF LOW BIRT WEIGHT (LBW) AT DISTRICT OF BANGKA BELITUNG INDONESIA IN 2010

INTRODUCTION:

Malaria is a major health problem in Indonesia. Kapuas is one of 338 malaria endemic distric in Indonesia with clinical malaria rate 51.87% and positive malaria rate 9.46% in 2008. Pregnant mothers are the major group at risk for malaria infection. Malaria infection during pregnancy contributes to maternal morbidity and low birth weight.  

METHODS:  

This was a case-control study with the population are infans,namely LBW infants (<2500 gr) as a cases and normal birth weight infants (2500-4000 gr) as control within the period of 2008-2009. There were 174 total subject, comprising 58 as cases and 116 as control. Cases had taken by a total number of existing cases, with inclusion and exclusion criteria.Data analysis used univariable, bivariable (chi square) and multivariabel (logistic regression).

RESULTS:  

There was significant association between malaria infection in pregnant mothers and the incidence of LBW infants (crude OR =2,90; 95% CI=1,38-6,10), and after adjusted or controlled simultaneously for external variables, influence of malaria infection has remained stable (adjusted OR = 2,97; 95% CI= 1,37-6,39). Pregnant mothers with malaria infection had a risk 2,9 times greater for delivering LBW infants than normal birth weight infants . All external variables which controlled have no influencer between malaria infection in pregnant mothers with the incidence of LBW infants. After adjusted, external variables maternal age (<20 and ≥35 years with respectively OR= 3.82 and 3.62), primigravida (OR= 3.31) and malnutrition status (OR= 3.0) had higher risk to delivering LBW infants. 

CONCLUSIONS:  

pregnant mothers who delivered infants with LBW the malaria infected more than pregnant mothers who delivered infants with normal birth weight.
