INTRODUCTION:

Background Knowledge on the epidemiology of childhood cancer in Algeria, particularly in Tlemcen, is limited. we used the Tlemcen Cancer registry database, reported from 2005-2010 to describe the epidemiology of childhood cancer and estimate trend incidence.

Materials and methods The cancer registry collects data on all new cases of cancer, diagnosed among the population of Tlemcen. collecting data is an active process involving visits by registry staff to all data sources. The ICCC-3 was used for diagnosis classification.

Results from 2005 to 2010, 157 new cases of childhood cancer were registered among children ,living in Tlemcen, representing 2.6% of all cancers, with an annual average of 26 cases, The ASR for all sites combined, was 103.3 per million, for boys 117.7 per million and 88.2 per million for girls. The most common cancers were CNS (26.1%, ASR 27.8 per million), lymphomas (18.4%, ASR 18.2 per million), leukemias(16.6%, ASR 17.5 per million), and malignant bone tumors (8.1%, ASR 8.2 per million). The  trend analysis showed a significant increase in incidence, for all cancers and sexes combined (P<10-3, 0R=1.64, IC95%:1.35–2, r2=0.48) and the following locations: CNS, lymphomas, leukemia and neuroblastoma. For girls (P<10-3, 0R=1.1 IC95% : 1.07–1.13, r2=0.24) and the following locations: CNS, lymphomas, leukemia. For boys (P<10-3, 0R=2.24 IC95% : 1.84–2.72) and the following locations: CNS and lymphomas. There were steady trends for malignant bone tumors (girls and boys) and leukemia  for boys.

Conclusion Our results are  show an increased trend of cancer incidence in Tlemcen pediatric population, particularly for CNS, lymphomas and leukemia, illustrating the need for an effective monitoring and etiology
